Question

How many static public IP addresses do I get with my bonded ADSL connection?

Answer

Each Bonded ADSL and Bonded SDSL connection is assigned a /30 IP range, which is a subnet of 4 addresses. Every subnet has the first and last addresses dedicated to the routing of the network, so in practice it gives us 2 usable IP addresses. As we need to give one of these to the Edge Bonder on your site, this gives you 1 usable IP to put onto your firewall as standard.

We can also, depending on your needs, assign a larger IP range, which would mean you could have multiple firewalls, or dedicate IPs to a particular server or application. It is important to talk through your IP requirements early on so we can tailor a solution to really fit your business needs.

It also makes a difference to us, as every ISP in the country is bound by RIPE, which is the organisation in Europe for maintaining and assigning IP address ranges. Because there are actually a finite number of addresses left on the current scale, each must be justified, so part empty ranges are not spread around the country wasting valuable IP space.

Don't worry, we will make sure you have all the IP addresses you need, but part of that process is a simple justification for anything more than the normal standard range. There may also be ways for us to reduce the amount of IPs you currently use with some intelligent network management. Talk to one of our network management experts today.
